Farewell to Susan

As December rolled around, Susan, the perfect house guest, had to depart. She moved into a nearby hotel, and we prepared the house for the arrival of Grand Papa Chauvin. We were sad to see Susan go. She brought such warmth and liveliness to the place. I know La Petite Fille will miss her greatly. Here are some photos of our farewell dinner and brunch with her.

Au revoir, Susan. Bon voyage!

The impact of Susan!

As I mentioned Susan is our house guest. She arrived a week ago & is scheduled to depart in a week, but we’re begging her to reconsider & stay for another week after that. Let me clue you in to her impact on Trio Central through pictures. Click on the thumbnails & read my commentary.

Art-tastic!

I’ve made it no secret that I am a fan of La Petite Fille’s art and think that it belies an artistic skill that will only bloom & grow as she does. There is something about her eye for detail, her sense of perspective, and appreciation of form… I don’t have the proper art nomenclature to describe it. I look at her figures, people, animal, or dolls, and they have such animation in their postures & expressions. That’s the best I can do to express what I’m seeing. So, judge for yourself in this gallery (be sure to click on the pics to see the larger representation & my commentary).

The Ides of November…

…and luckily there have been no political or otherwise assassinations at Trio Central.

An all night card game!

Hopefully not in your neck of the woods, too. There has been a DEVELOPMENT though! We have a house guest! Our dear friend Susan as come to stay with us for two weeks! She recently moved out of her house in preparation for joining husband, Dan, in Washington state in December. She’s been the easiest most wonderful house guest EVER!

Then, not only did Maman Trio get SICK with some viral infection & miss a couple of

Oh, those mismatched kids show their spirit!

days this week, her school, SSIS, had Mismatch Spirit Day! A lot of the students joined the fun! You know, Mismatch Day is where you wear clothes that don’t go together: mixed patterns, formal & informal, clashing colors, pajamas & street clothes… whatever you can think of that doesn’t go together.

Look at what Maman Trio’s students dreamed up! But wait! What’s on their feet?!?

Shoes have gone missing!

Papa Smurf in da house!

We have another new household member! Papa Smurf! Sunday 20 November is Vietnamese Teacher’s Day & one of Maman Trio’s students remembered that La Petite Fille loved Smurfs & gave her a Papa Smurf for Teacher’s Day. What a wonderful thoughtful child that is. And how much does she love Maman Trio to give her such a terrific gift?

Now to go along with her numerous drawings, viewing of online images, and her Smurf Village, she has a real live Papa Smurf plush toy! A dream come true.

I’ll leave you with a couple of early morning images from Trio Central.

We're at the breakfast table enjoying our morning routine: everyone with their own computer!

Trip to the Doctor

Yesterday when we went to see Tintin, I noticed that La Petite Fille complained of pain in her vulva region, yelped in pain while urinating, & seemed to have a frequency of urination. I began to suspect that she had a bladder infection, however, I wondered if such things were likely in one so young or that she had just neglected her hygiene as six-year olds are want to do.

Sunday came and she was definitely experiencing pain during urination and frequency of urination, so I suggested that she had a bladder infection. Maman Trio decided we should go in to see our good friends at Family Medical Practice. So by 10:30 AM or so, we were off!

It only took us three hours for the doctor to collect a urine sample, have an ultrasound done, and prescribe antibiotics. The place was fairly dead. Very few patients were visible. They had to call the ultrasound DOCTOR (not tech) in, so that took forty-five minutes, but that was during the wait for the urinalysis results to come back.

Yes sir, it’s a bladder infection. But, since they are rare in children, the doctor wanted to investigate the structure of the kidneys. It made sense. I like cautious doctors and medicine.

Yes sir, La Petite Fille has an abnormality in her kidney just like Papa Trio and Aunt Trio. La Petite Fille has a divided chamber (I can’t remember the official medical term) in her left kidney; Papa Trio has an extra lobe & ureter on his right kidney; and Aunt Trio is short a lobe on her right kidney (Papa Trio must’ve gotten it). Since there are two kidneys, there are wide variations like this. The ultrasound doc didn’t think it was a big deal or anything to worry about. The GP thought it might mean that she’ll be vulnerable to urinary tract infections.

Either way, we’re back on Monday to follow up with Dr. Runa Terakawa, pediatrician. We’ve got antibiotics, but its better to have a real pediatrician see her, you know, just in case.

I didn’t take the camera during the visit, but got these shots of her taking her medicine.

This Week At School

Tis been a hard week at Trio Central! First, you can read all about Papa Trio’s hard day last week on Saigon Drive Byz. But, that day was followed by Sports Day at AIS. The day was organized by the Student Council at the school and Papa Trio is the adviser. It was a great day, but we had a lot of players go down with cramps. That’s how hot it was. Then it rained. We finished most of the games, but had to disband when the lightening showed up. I had a great time officiating dodge ball and Ultimate Frisbee so much so I’m hoping to find some Ultimate Frisbee games to join.

Maman Trio had an adventure all her own at school, too. She accompanied the fourth graders on a field trip to a Vietnamese Craft Village out by the Cu Chi Tunnels. It was a fun trip. The students learned a lot, but it was hot & tiring. It was a five hour drive round trip, so in an eight hour school day, that doesn’t leave much time for the village. Then it rained late in the afternoon just to make sure the day was perfect.

Tin Tin Fans

The Trio has gone Tin Tin! What a fantastic movie! Papa Trio wants to read the books now! Can you believe they put Steven Spielberg in the movie? That was Steven Spielberg, wasn’t it? And the voice of Tin Tin sounded just like Frodo! And the 50′s action sequences! And the cross of live action & animation! And the wide array of jokes! And just everything!

Except they made it all British & not French. What’s up with that? Seriously. Why couldn’t it be French accents, Montmartre, & Marseilles? Who would believer an absurd name like Tin Tin would be British anyway? I mean I can only suspend my disbelief so far.

Anywho, La Petite Fille says, “Go see this movie! And buy the collector’s addition DVD!” She’s pretty savvy that way.

Well, if you’d ever wondered what the Trio would look like all Smurfed out, well now you know. Hey! Wait a minute! That’s not Maman Trio!?! Where’s Maman Trio? Duh! She’s done it to me again!

The WASP!

The WASP: a story in three panels

La Petite Fille has become quite the story teller. Her she depicts a true story straight from the playground of SSIS! In three panels, she tells the story of how she & three boys found a wasp on the playground, one of them squirts it with his water bottle, & she runs away saying “WASP!!!”
