w How it all began...

May 2009 Madeleine bought her first gift! Just in time for Mother's Day!

This little lovely was picked out for Maman Trio! Of course Bebé Trio has had to make sure it was play-worthy and will be letting Maman Trio take full time possession of it... well... soon. Really! No really! Really! Really soon... promise.

January 2009 Madeleine has her first school pictures! For the other photos, see the School page. Here's the class; can you find Madeleine?

That's her teacher, Ms Daley on the right and a hint for finding Bebé Trio: look to the right in the back!

December 2008 Madeleine makes her first contribution to the marshalltrio website!

November 2008 Madeleine writes her first Two!

This morning, November 8, Madeleine sat down and announced, Numero doux! Maman Trio and Papa Trio exchanged a look saw what she had done and just started applauding. Our little girl can write! Write! Actually write! Wow! Look at that numero doux! We're just overwhelmed and overjoyed!

October 2008 First Drawn Facsimile of a Person!

Yes, that's right! Last Friday night right in front of me, Madeleine drew a slightly pointed oval and put two dots in it. Then a curved semi-circle inside and I realized that it looked just like a person! So I said, "O la la, une beau souris!" (Oh a beautiful smile). And then she drew two straight lines under it and I got excited! I said, "O la la, deux jambes!" (Oh, two legs). And then she drew two horizontal lines to either side and... the "bonhomme" was complete! It took my breathe away!

August 2008 First TV Dinner

Madeleine had her first independent meal while watching TV.  She's not done so well in the feed herself department, but with a little help from Caillou (Plonge la cuiller dans la boule ! -- Plunge the spoon into the bowl!) encouragement from Mama Trio, she managed to feed herself just fine.

June 2008 First Writing!

After Papa Trio left for Bangkok, Madeleine left him a terrific welcome home surprise! A picture is worth a thousand words, see for yourself!

April 17, 2007 First choux!

Madeleine had a very unusual treat today - a choux pastry filled with fresh cream. She took a tentative bite of this strange object with an unsure look. But soon, that choux was toast. By the third picture, you can see that half the cream made it to the floor. Some actually made it into her mouth, but I'd say a third might still be on that jacket and in her hair. Just kidding; we washed her hair. The jacket's in the laundry hamper.

March 28, 2007 First telephone conversations!

It's a fact around the Marshall household - we don't talk on the phone much. Basically, people have learned to contact us by email. The only times Jon and I use our cell phones is to call each other - at most, once a day. The land line (the regular phone) gathers dust. However, Madeleine started picking up various objects (remote control, hairbrushes, small stuffed animals, etc...) and, using them as telephones, started saying 'hello' into them. The other day, she surprised both of us by using the 'real' telephone.

So, for your listening and viewing pleasure, here are three clips of Madeleine chatting. For Caillou fans, you might recognize the episode where Caillou goes to work with his mom. At one point his mother senses he is bored so she calls up his dad and Caillou has a short conversation that sounds like:

"Allo. Papa? C'est moi Caillou.
Je suis au travail avec Maman.
Nounou est ici..."

First she practices...watch for the big sigh...realizes no one is listening?

Gains confidence & improvises...even says 'au revoir' (goodbye in French) towards the end.

Finally, I dial Jon's cell phone and she has a 'real' conversation... until she gets bored and starts pushing buttons.

February 2007 Eating independently!

Madeleine never seemed to be all that interested in feeding herself. She'd sit back and let us do all the work. Mind you, this was cleaner and faster.

On the trip we noticed that she seemed interested in cutlery for the first time. While in Canada, we bought a fancy bib - complete with sleeves and food-catching pocket. We decided to see if Madeleine was ready. She still fits in her Bumbo, so we sat the Bumbo on a dinning chair, and suited her up. To our amazement, she picked up the spoon and tried to pick up cut up noodles out of her bowl. Not much food went into her mouth that time, but a  week later, she was eating like a pro. Here's a picture of her first try. Notice that her hair is wet because we had to wipe off some bits of food. Below the picture we've put a video of her prowess.

July 16, 2006 First real toothbrush!

Madeleine almost has all her teeth. There is a gap between the back molars and the cupids. Thing is, those back molars are supposed to come last. The other molars might be coming quite soon because she's chewing on stuff a lot these days - especially her hands, clothes and father's set of keys. Seeing as she should soon have a complete set of pearly whites, we thought we'd get her hooked on good dental hygiene early. So far so good. She really seems to like chewing on her new toothbrush. Below we've got a shot of her showing off her brushing stills and a video of her showing off her manual dexterity - but not by brushing her teeth.

Multi-tasking

July 16, 2006 First Art!

A budding Emily Carr? We bought Madeleine her first set of 5 crayons today and she took to them like frogs to water. She quickly worked out which end of the crayons would produce a line of color and which didn't. Then, it was scribble after wonderful scribble for us to ooohh and aaahhh at. The first 'masterpiece' when straight to the fridge and the other three will be up for auction on E-Bay, ha ha ha!

June 25, 2006 First soccer moves!

Seeing as this is Madeleine's first World Cup, I thought I'd teach her something of futbol.  On the left is Madeleine's first attempt at trapping a pass courtesy of her mother. And on the right is Madeleine's first attempt at a sliding tackle courtesy of gravity and a still-developing sense of balance.

Look out Mia Hamm!

June 19th to 21, 2006 a cluster of firsts!

1) The KAL Hotel had two lovely pools -- the indoor one that you'll see in the videos and an outdoor one that was closed.  Madeleine loves the water and after she got over her first bit of apprehension, she loved the pool.  She's kicking her little legs and paddling her little arms for all she's worth!  I had so much fun in the water with her, it almost made me want to start swimming regularly -- ALMOST.

2) We all know that baby's get some traits from their mothers and some from their fathers.  I guess we're not alone in trying to guess where each identifiable trait came from and hoping that she gets the best of both of us. I'll let you judge into which category this story falls.

We arrived in Cheju City which is on the north side of the island and our hotel is on the south side, so we had to take the airport limo service.  Don't get to excited, it's just a fancy name for a bus.

We sat about midway back and Madeleine was being fussy.  We went through the usual and unusually short checklist with her -- hungry or sleepy or both -- and promptly began to feeder crackers and water.  She ate all of the crackers we could give her.  She drank all the water that she wanted.  Then she sat next to me and played with the button that reclines the seats and my keys and whatever else was handy.

The route winds through the center of the island around Mt. Halla, the tallest peak in South Korea.  The bus driver was a typical jack-rabbit starting, brake-screeching, hard-turning Mario Andretti-type.  I was clutching Madeleine just to keep her in her seat when she started to act real sleepy.

She climbed into my lap and I reclined my seat.  Madeleine lay her head on my chest and tried to sleep -- bless her heart.  She cried and whined a little every so often, though.  We were about five minutes out when she pushed her head and shoulders up off of me, let out a great loud cry, and retched the contents of her stomach all over my chest!

At first, I started to hold her back, but realized that she could choke.  Then I realized that since I was already covered in vomitus, I may as well let her puke some more on me.  Really, it seemed better that than the floor, Jo, the seats, or anything else that was handy.

She finished up her episode and Jo and I removed her beautiful blue dress that she had worn for the first time that day.  As Jo cleaned up the mess on Madeleine, I exited the bus to be greeted by a very dubious looking hotel employee.  It didn't take him long to cotton to what had transpired and what I was up to -- I ignored him completely and removed our bags from under the bus to retrieve a clean shirt.

He left and returned with several cloth napkins from the restaurant.  I cleaned myself up enough to be presentable for check-in.  Jo had cleaned Madeleine up enough, too.  We checked.  Madeleine and I bathed and changed clothes and we began enjoying our visit to Cheju-do.

I guess I should've been wary when Jo looked over at me about a minute before Madeleine erupted and said, "I'm so nauseous.  This guy's driving is giving me the worst motion sickness."  Oh well, like mother, like daughter, I guess.

Well here are some before pictures, you'll understand I trust that we skipped the afters.

And yes, it really was her first time to vomit.  She'd brought up excess milk before during her first four months or so, but never really did a full-on stomach emptying retching puke session.  Well, this time was the real McCoy.  Trust me.

3) Madeleine had her first kiss!  We met this little boy and his family in the restaurant at the hotel.  He was walking already and REAL friendly.  Well, it was infatuation at first sight and there was nothing mom or dad could do but try and snap a picture or two.

4) I guess we saved the BIG news for last.  It's official. We can't keep it hidden any longer.  Madeleine is now a card carrying bona fide member of the Independent Walkers of the World!

She's been stumbling for a step or two here or there for the past week, but we didn't think that really counted.  She's been lunging for things that are just a step or two away for the past couple of weeks, but we didn't think that counted either.  She's tottered between us -- more like not fallen than walking -- as long as she's gotten a big push for several weeks, but we didn't think that counted.  Well, in the suite on Cheju-do, she let go of one of those ornate chairs took two steps looked a little confused started to squat and then took three or four steps more!

She looked so proud of herself!  She's been walking everywhere since.

The best video we've got so far is the "Walking on Grass" video in the blog.  We'll post more though, we promise.

March 23, 2006 Madeleine's first Easter eggs!

Thank you Susan for the lovely surprise (and the DVDs)! Lucky the eggs were hard boiled because the minute Madeleine got her hands on them she banged them together.

March 17, 2006 Madeleine's first birthday cake!

Happy Birthday Baby. Happy St-Patrick's Day to all.

Jo made a cake for Madeleine's birthday. In case you're interested, what do two health conscious vegetarians make for baby's first dessert? Well, it's an organic zucchini and honey cake with raisins. The icing is fresh whipped cream. Don't knock it till you try it.  Video of blowing out the candles in blog.

February 21st, 2006 Madeleine sings!

If you're not French-Canadian, you probably don't know who Carmen Campagne is, but I'd say most of the children in my my hometown are fans. She's a singer/songwriter who performs for kids (and some lucky adults). My sister gave us a video tape 'Chocolat Chaud' of hers and my mom gave us a CD of her songs. I didn't think Madeleine would be into this yet. She's a big fan of the Baby Einstein series that my cousin Dominique generously gave us as her three children have outgrown it.

Out of curiosity, one day I popped the video in to see what the fuss was all about. You see, I knew Gabrielle and Stephanie were big fans. Well, I turned to Madeleine halfway into the first song and she was totally mesmerized. We've been playing the tape several times a week and Jon's even getting into it, learning the words to the popular 'Tirer ma vache' song. The other day, as Jon was coming in the door, the song 'Tirer ma vache' was playing in the background, while I was tidying up and Madeleine seemed to be playing quietly in front of the TV. All of a sudden, she made a string of noises that made Jon and I look up at each other stunned. Had Madeleine sung along? I tested out the theory today with the video camera at the ready. Sure enough, she seems to be singing along in the chorus. Don't expect Celine Dion though. Madeleine only sings two or three words. Still, it's fun to watch.

The first two videos are Madeleine watching Carmen Campagne performing two of her hits: Davida la poule ('Davida the hen' who's tired of perching and wants a nice comfortable cushion to rest on) and Tirer ma vache (Milking my stubborn cow sung opera style).

Davida la poule

Tirer ma vache

In the next videos you'll see Madeleine responding to my horrible singing of Tirer la Vache. When I sing a line, she's supposed to respond "Pas capable de tirer ma vache"  which means 'I can't get milk from my cow'. See if you can hear her say some of those words...well at least the first 2 or 3.

Sounds like it...

I'm sure I heard it this time!

February 6th, 2006 Madeleine's first snow!

Snow in Pusan: it doesn't happen often, it doesn't stay long, but when it does, we really appreciate it! This time was extra special as it was Madeleine's first hand experience with the fluffy white (ok sticky wet) stuff. Jon says it snowed Texas style... which just means it snowed and melted the same day. But it was a very pretty morning. Oh, and yes Jon is wearing his Pittsburg Stealers hat. And yes, they won the Super bowl!

In this lower picture Madeleine is tasting her first snow....no, not yellow snow. Jon said she was really into it. I can see that snow cones are gonna be popular next summer.

February 1st, 2006 Madeleine's new moves!

Madeleine does not crawl or walk. My mom says that 'she hasn't found the floor yet' meaning I guess that we are reluctant to put her down. Yes, we're guilty. Guilty, guilty, guilty!  In case you weren't aware of this, Madeleine is with us 24/7. Jon and I have organized our teaching schedules so that we don't need a babysitter or daycare and that' s the way we like it. Let's just say that Madeleine hasn't had to struggle much with her two overzealous parents around, and hey, we don't care what people think. We just love being with her and find her the most fascinating thing since cable access Internet connection brought us on demand movie previews.

Well, lately, daddy's been making sure Madeleine gets a LOT of floor time because he read that babies who go straight to walking (skip crawling) might be less coordinated later.

We went out and bought a carpet with insulation pad for her to 'lounge' on. Yesterday, Jon filmed Madeleine's new carpet moves:

January 20th, 2006 Madeleine's first teeth!

The long awaited lower central incisors are here! For a couple of weeks, running my finger along her lower gum line, I could feel something different but I could never say for sure. To make it harder, Madeleine will not let anyone pry her mouth open for a look. Then, poof, they just appeared last Monday. That's the good news. The bad news is that I'm still breastfeeding and Madeleine has since chomped down on me thrice. Ouch! I let out a yelp of pain and Madeleine looked stunned for a second and then started to cry loudly. I don't know why, but I didn't have much sympathy - even though I did console her. Time to wean I think!

I waited to make the announcement till I could give you visual proof. By the way, getting a good shot of her lower gum line was no small feat since prying was out of the question. They don't look it, but those two little buds are sharp!

November 19th, 2005 Madeleine's first wine tasting!

The Busan Alliance Francaise was having a Beaujolais party this Saturday. Sang-hee and Jon both take French conversation classes there. We met their teachers and classmates. Madeleine was the youngest attendee. She seem more interested in the Elmo than the vino. It was my first glass of wine in a while - so I stuck with just the one. Jon sipped cool sparkling soda and Madeleine enjoyed her usual - warm mo-you (Korean for mother's milk).

November 18th, 2005 Madeleine's first pet rabbit?

No. But this is her first face to fur encounter with a real live one. Our neighbor Nick (who's balcony adjoins ours) has a rabbit that occasionally hops over for a visit. Well, he's gotten so used to us that when we opened the patio doors to give him some salad leftovers, he jumped right into the living room. Immediately, Madeleine was VERY interested in this little guy. You see Jon restraining her hand? That's to protect the rabbit.  First time we let her 'pet' it, we thought she almost tore off his ears.

July 11th, 2005 Madeleine's first sit in a walker!

And she loved it! I went to Emiko's house and on a lark, we decided to put Madeleine in June's walker. June was born at the end of last August (2004) a bit prematurely, but is still much older and bigger than her. What a surprise, Madeleine didn't even need any bolstering! She sat up by herself and even managed to move herself around a bit with the tips of her toes.

July 8th, 2005 Madeleine's first hand-me-downs!

Our friends Michelle and Patrick are returning to Canada soon.  They're trying to lighten their load, so they're getting rid of all of Marieve's old clothes.  They kept them thinking that their second child might be a daughter, but he wasn't.  They've got about five large shopping bags full of clothes everywhere from six months to two years.  Most of them are in great shape since Michelle only buys the best.

Below is one of the cutest dresses that Michelle gave us. I think Madeleine will look much better in it than Oliver ever would have.

July 2nd, 2005 Madeleine tastes adult food!

Do you want to see her first taste of solids? Check out the video below. She really liked it!

June 27th, 2005 Madeleine rolls over from tummy to back!

Who says horoscopes are full of baloney? Read today's Korea Herald's Pisces prediction: Nothing can stop you from accomplishing your goals. You will have a very innovative way of approaching everything you do today. Something remarkable you learn will help you excel.

Well today, when Jon came home, I told him the great news about Madeleine having rolled over from tummy to back. Later on, while he was doing the crossword puzzle with his daughter (apparently she likes it) he noticed her horoscope and we both laughed.

Yea baby! We'll follow through with a video real soon, promise!

Week of June 13 to 17th, 2005 Madeleine wants to sit up!

She always seemed to be comfortable just lounging back in her bouncy chair or in the boppy. However, this week, she started trying to pull herself to sitting up straight position. Maybe it's all the pictures of other babies in Bumbo chairs that got her motivated. Well, here's the result! (Ok, we know she's pulling a finger or two to get 90 degrees, but we're proud nonetheless.)

June 10th, 2005 Madeleine moves to the big tub!

Actually, it's the big tub for a baby. The Marshall home does not have a 'bathtub' per say. We live in a 'joo-tek' which is Korean for 'apartment in a house'. It means we have the older style bathroom, the one that's a small room with a toilet, sink and hand-held shower...all in the same room - no partition. We found a nice big green plastic tub for Madeleine to practice in. In September, we'll be moving to a 2 bedroom apartment that has a real bathtub. Yea!

June 4th, 2005 Madeleine is out of newborn clothing size!

OK, I know it's a pretty feeble excuse to put up a cute picture, but I'm a parent and IT'S ALLOWED!  Yep, what you see Madeleine wearing is a 3~6 months onesie. There is NO way she will be wearing these for that length of time.

May 24th, 2005 Madeleine is breastfed in public for the first time!

Emiko and I went to SfunZ in Haeundae to shop and look around. June needed his second breakfast (any LOTR fans?) around the same time Madeleine needed to be fed, so we went into a coffee shop that was almost empty. One seating area had little half-moon benches with a frosted glass partition, so I sat with my back to the entrance and got Madeleine into position. Problem was, she was half asleep and didn't seem ready. Luckily, June (who is a very hungry boy) would cry between courses and this woke Madeleine up enough for her to pay attention to me. I thought breastfeeding in public would be hard for me, but I found out that it wasn't a big deal at all. The women in my chatting board gave me this advice: ignore your surroundings and focus on your baby. That really helped! I'm totally comfortable with the idea now, and I've stopped worrying about feeding Madeleine on the flight to Canada. Yea!

May 17th, 2005 Madeleine's first play date!

Emiko and June came over today. Usually, when they visited in the past, either June or Madeleine would be asleep and so they never really interacted. This time, they met, shares toys and took part in than wonderful thing called 'tandem crying': you know, one baby cries and the other joins in. Babies are very sympathetic!

June was a perfect gentleman even though it was clear he was fascinated by our beautiful Madeleine. Well, what very young man wouldn't be?

May 15th, 2005 Madeleine's first ride in a police car!

Today was Buddha's Birthday. All around Korea, people are flocking to temples to take part in the celebration. It's really beautiful because hundreds of paper lanterns holding a lit candle are strung about the temple grounds.

Jon and I decided to take Madeleine to Pomosa Temple for her first Buddhist celebration. (After all, her daddy is a follower of Buddhism and it's never to early to start a child's religious education.)  As most of you know, Jon and I don't have a car. Don't let me start a rant on Korean traffic and insane driving techniques! Suffice to say, the public transportation system is wonderful, and taxis are cheap. Well, we couldn't get a cab to drive us up to the temple because the one-way road up to the temple is chock full of traffic, so we figured we'd take the bus.

We walked from our house to the base of the mountain that the temple is located on, but weren't sure where to catch the bus. Several police cars were parked at the intersection - some to direct traffic, others getting ready to go up the winding road to Pomosa. I went over to the men in blue (really) and asked where the bus stop was. The gentleman in the photo below waved us to his car and said he's take us. Aren't Koreans great!

May 14th, 2005 Madeleine's been finding her hands...are delicious!

This is the time in a baby's development when they can start bringing their hands to their mouth and will begin discovering how much fun they can have with them. So, not only has Madeleine started drooling in droves, but she can now cover her hands with spit as well! We are so proud!

May 11th, 2005 Madeleine's first family walk!

Today we went for an after dinner stroll with our very curious baby. Ages ago, when Madeleine was just, oh, 3 weeks old, she would fall asleep immediately when we put her in the pouch or the Kozy Carrier. However, these days, she's Miss Curious and will observe from her new vantage point.

Last night, after dinner, Jon and I decided to take our first group walk. Jon had the honor of 'wearing the baby'. There's a picture of proud papa below. We walked about 5,500 steps (3.3 km or about 2 miles). I know this because Jon bought me a digital pedometer for my 'health walks'. This is how I'm planning on loosing the extra 3 kg I've been carrying around. Not much I know, but enough to make my 'pre-pregnancy pants' feel too snug.

May 9th, 2005 Madeleine' lifts her head!

Are we parents or coaches? You'd swear we were training her for the baby Olympics if you saw us cheering her on tonight. 'Come on baby, you can do it! Lift your chin, life your chin for mommy... that's it!' Well, have a look at this pictorial of Madeleine's Olympic Head Lifting training.

May 8th, 2005 Madeleine's first Mother's day

.

May 2nd, 2005 Madeleine's first puppy.

Just kidding. Actually, Lisa visited WITH a puppy. Ok, so it's the first time that Madeleine's SEEN a puppy. Lisa found this cute little guy on the side of the road and couldn't resist. Does anyone want a puppy? Looking for a good home! Just let us know.

April 28th, 2005 Madeleine's first coffee at Starbucks.

Well no wonder she was fussy tonight! Just kidding, she slept through most of her visit at the coffee mecca. Jon usually goes to Starbucks (10 min. walk from the university) to do some editing or correcting. This morning he invited Madeleine and I along. We couldn't stay long (just between 2 hour - feeding times) but we had a lovely time. Of course, I stayed away from the caffeine and had a Perrier (that's why it looks like I'm drinking water).

In case you're wondering, I'm carrying our little bundle of joy in a Kozy Carrier. It's made of canvas organic cotton - great for the summer months.

April 24th, 2005 Madeleine's first time going to a birthday party.

Leon (on the left) and his cousin hamming it up for the camera.

Today was Leon Kim's birthday party. He turned 5 and we were invited to Emiko and Won-gil's for a birthday lunch. Won-gil's sister and her two children were also there. Jon and I put Madeleine in her Kozy Carrier and took a cab to their house. In true form, Madeleine was a perfect guest...well, she slept most of the time and when she did wake up for a little while, she was the charming princess we know and love. Unfortunately, she was too small for cake, but fortunately, she didn't know what she was missing. Emiko had make a lovely fresh cream and strawberry shortcake.

Today was also significant in the fact that it was the first time I breastfed away from home. Every other time we went out (to the pediatrician or the hospital) I would pump milk and we brought a bottle along. I'll have to learn how to stealth breastfeed if I truly want to be out and about with Madeleine.

April 6th, 2005 Madeleine's first visit at the pediatrician.

My first though as we went into the pediatrician's waiting room was 'Oh my God what a zoo! Look at all these kids!' Of course now it makes sense that a pediatrician's office would be full of children; why hadn't I anticipated that? Some kids seemed very sick (they were listless or lying down), others were coughing away madly, others whining or crying their eyes out when the doctor tries to examine them with those scary cold instruments  or (shiver) give them an injection. And since the doc's office door was wide open, you could see and hear what was happening to all the little kiddies ahead. I'm sure it made the kids waiting feel oh-so-happy to be called in just after hearing someone their own size cry bloody murder and come out wiping a torrent of tears from their face .

Well, Jon and I got there at 11 a.m. since he had to teach and come back home, fill up the diaper bag full of 'just in case' items, and find this doctor's office. I had pumped some milk 'just in case' it took a while, and good think I did. The waiting room was FULL of moms, grandmas and kids...and one dad other than Jon. The receptionist told us it would take an hour. Well, I wasn't about to wait an hour in THAT waiting room. I kept thinking, 'I can't let Madeleine breathe any of this air or she'll come back home sick for sure.' I was so glad Madeleine was in her pouch; I felt it offered some degree of protection. Jon told the receptionist that we'd be back in an hour. She seemed a bit alarmed at this idea, but we reminded her she could call our cell phone if our turn should come sooner.

We went across the street to a traditional Korean restaurant (where you sit on the floor) and Jon had some lunch. My stomach was still too fragile for such stuff. The waitress kindly brought a bowl of hot water to heat Madeleine's bottle. After she drank most of it she went right back to sleep. That pouch is a life saver. We were the second to last to see the pediatrician, so when we went back, the room had emptied quite a bit. The doc was a nice woman who had limited English, but a gentle touch and a kind smile. She washed her hands before handling Madeleine, and checked her eyes, ears, mouth and chest with a stethoscope. She prescribed eye drops for 4 days and said it should clear up but if it didn't, we'd have to go see a specialist. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Boy I hope this little girl inherits her daddy's healthy constitution and we can avoid pediatrician's offices as much as possible in the future.

March 31st, 2005  Madeleine had her first bottle from daddy.

This is very encouraging because it will free up her mommy from house arrest, uh, I mean needing to be around 24/7.
