December, 2006 Why hasn't there been any action in this blog for almost 2 months? It's because we've been away...far away. The Marshall's actually circled the globe! First we went to Canada for Christmas, a Christening and a wedding; then we headed to France to see our apartment and meet Yetunde; then it was off to Bangkok for a job fair; next we took it easy in Singapore, Hong Kong and Taipei. The CD containing all our Canada pictures has malfunctioned so we are not able to document the Canadian leg of our trip at the moment. We'll have to wait for Gilles to send us a new disk. Keep your fingers crossed... The rest of the trip occurred in 2007, so you'll have to go to that new blog area...that will be available soon. In the meantime, here's a pic of the Marshall's in Bangkok. Why is Jo wearing a turtleneck sweater in the tropics? Air conditioning maxed out in the hotel. BTW, that's a painting of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (A.K.A. King Rama IX) behind us. Thai people love their king. We have big news for 2007. See you there!
December 3, 2006 Madeleine sounds out her world. In the past month, her habit of imitating noise, music and voices around her has stepped up a notch. Just the other morning, we'd barely woken up (prime time for her to try to make new sounds) and I realized she was trying to imitate the sound of a bird chirping outside the window. Since she does most of her 'parroting' quietly, you really have to pay attention or you'll miss it. A few days ago, I had put on some Christmas tunes on, and Jon was waltzing around with Madeleine in his arms. He turned to me and said - hey, she's trying to sing this carol. She isn't picky about her inspirations either. It can be a special effect from a video she's watching, a noise made by a dropped object or an unconscious noise we make while going about our daily life. But whenever we catch on, it's priceless. I only wish we were quick enough to catch more of them on video. In the meantime, here she is showing off another new skill. December 1, 2006 Twenty-five days to Christmas. Seems impossible. We've been so busy with school stuff - life stuff - baby stuff. Please forgive the long delay. Things are definitely nippy in Busan. Big change from the abnormally warm fall. Madeleine now gets bundled up before any outing and we've put the 5-in-one back in the Jeep to keep her legs toasty warm. We'll be heading to Canada in two weeks. There is only one week of classes left. Then, we'll grade exams/sift through grades/and input it all in the PNU computer system before we go. Oh, and we have to pack too. In the last few weeks we've experience a new milestone - the tantrum. At least, that's what we think it is. Well, it must be something. We've never experience this kind of behavior with Madeleine before. Something will set her off and she seems inconsolable for minutes on end. She doesn't hit or kick, but she seems to jerk her body a bit. And the crying is different. Usually, some good distraction will stop it-like singing one of her favorite songs or as a last resort, putting in Bambi in the video player. We're still experimenting. Should be fun going around the world in an airplane with her exhibiting early signs of independence...oh my! Below is a picture of sad Madeleine after a cry - tears dried up but still quiet.
Next is her in her usual (thank goodness) mood - happy go lucky. Honestly, we can't complain. She's a great baby and we are two lucky parents!
November 11, 2006 Today is Remembrance Day in Canada (in the U.S.A. it's called 'Veteran's Day.') Here in Korea, we November 11 is a totally different occasion - Peppero Day! The picture below was taken a couple of days ago when she wouldn't go down for a nap at her regular time, so after 2 hrs of trying every trick in the book I finally sat her on the sofa to watch Bambi and did some grading. She fell asleep during the credits.
Jon washed the floors this morning and I have a video of Madeline running round and round the sofa that had been pulled out. Jon said she ran steadily for 5 minutes! Luckily the floors were dry or else we would have seen a wipe out. We also go a semi-candid video of Madeleine playing with her toy electronic keyboard. She was chewing on something...can't remember now...piece of apple or orange? October 31, 2006 Happy Halloween! A big big thank you to Nathalie, Jo's sister, for sending the cutest ladybug costume that Madeleine is wearing below. Madeleine was very comfortable in it and seemed to get a kick from seeing herself in the mirror, wearing it. It was well designed for a small child. It was just a shame that there was no Halloween party this year at the English Chatting Cafe. Oh well - we dressed her up at home anyway.
Then, our favorite little insect got to trick or treat at Susan's (for a pre-approved apple). Yes, I know what you're thinking - how boring...an apple for a treat? Well, it just so happens that Madeleine loves apples. "Pomme" is one of her favorite French words.
Below is Madeleine taking off with her first Halloween treat. What a difference from last year! She sure is growing up.
October 30, 2006 Cool weather arrived this week! Here's Madeleine in her new 'autumn sweater' with her own little pumpkin patch.
October 12, 2006 Today, a Marshall Trio first! We have a guest blogger. Kristine sent us her blog entry by email today. I had offered her a chance to participate in our little piece of cyberspace and she accepted. Thank you Kristine! (Why didn't I think of this earlier? I could have other people write in the blog and saved myself a lot of ... I mean, have wonderful input from Madeleine's family and fans!)
Here are a few photos taken with Kristine's camera while she was visiting. The first is at 'Dubu Maeul' (Tofu Village) and the second is of Kristine and Madeleine in our living room.
October 6 to 10, 2006 We had a visitor! Kristine came to visit us in Busan. She had taught with us at PNU five years ago. She left Korea for the wonderful cultural experience that is Bulgaria where she taught for 3 years. Now is in Taiwan. Korea's version of Thanksgiving or fall harvest festival, Chooseok, fell on October 5 through 8 -- that is Thursday through Sunday. Due to Taiwan's independence day, Ten-ten, Kristine had a four day weekend too, October 7 through 10 -- Saturday through Tuesday, which coincided somewhat with our Chooseok holiday. Well, okay so it only overlapped on Saturday and Sunday two days that we all normally have off, but still it seemed like a fortuitous coincident at the time. Well, because Taiwan is only a two hour flight from Busan, Kristine was able to arrive at 9:00 p.m. on FRIDAY night(!) even thought it was a work day for her. Jo went out to the airport to pick her up and Madeleine and Jon waited impatiently at home. Madeleine must have sensed the excitement in the air, because that first night and every night after, she stayed up until MIDNIGHT(!!!) we caught up with Kristine! Luckily, we all fell asleep pretty quickly. During that first hour that Kristine was here, she quickly charmed Madeleine -- as we knew she would. Madeleine was relaxed with her almost from the start. Madeleine, also, quickly charmed Kristine, too. They had fun playing and watching videos together during our down moments. As evidenced by the photo below.
On Saturday we re-visited the campus, looked around the PNU neighborhood and had dinner at our local Turkish restaurant. Sunday, Kristine and I had a girl's day. We went to the Paradise Hotel in Haeundae to enjoy their spa, which happens to have a wonderful view of the ocean. Kristine enjoyed a thorough whole body scrub, the ultimate mok-yo-tang luxury. Monday I had to work, but we did make it out to the Pomo Temple area and ate a great meal at our favorite Pomo area restaurant, 'Tofu Village'. Unfortunately, the old saying about time flying while in good company is true. Tuesday morning came so quickly and Kristine went back to the airport to catch her 9 a.m. flight home. October 3, 2006 Jo's birthday was quite active. As soon as we got up we started getting ready to take off. We had grand plans to have breakfast at a big hotel in Haeundae's since they usually have a nice buffet. Usually Madeleine wakes us at 7am or earlier...but our little 'alarm clock' slept in till 8:30 for a change! Oh well! Since we missed the breakfast buffet we decided a fresh croissant on the beach would be a nice plan B. We decided to take Madeleine to the aquarium. She ran and ran and ran, and then she fell asleep just before the shark tanks. We took advantage of this early nap and went for lunch at Ganga. Later we met some of our friends at Starbucks near the university.
Here are some pictures of our wonderful
day. Tomorrow we'll post some videos of Madeleine on the
boardwalk.
Madeleine & her daddy looking at the
'sand' sculpture.
Madeleine next to 'la grenouille' at the
aquarium.
Madeleine shaking the penguin's flipper.
At Ganga, with Madeleine sleeping in her
stroller next to our table.
Mom and daughter next to the birthday cake. In the group shot below, you can see standing behind us from left to right: Susan, Kyoung-hee, Lisa, Ryan and his new wife Hae-sook. Susan and Ryan teach in the same department as Jon. Kyoung-hee is the first Korean friend Jo ever made; in fact they met on the day Jo arrived in Korea back in December of 1997. Lisa used to work at PNU with us, but is now teaching at another university. No one was supposed to bring any gifts but Susan couldn't resist and gave Jo a very unique necklace: it is a pendant with a small glass cylinder that contains a grain of rice which has her name etched on it in English and Korean. We'll try to get a close up for you later.
September 24, 2006 Bonne fete Gilles! Bonne fete papa! Looks pretty young for a grandfather of five, doesn't he?
Below is a bonus video of Madeleine putting all six shapes in their slots in record time! She's training for the Toddler Olympics you know!
September 14, 2006 Sorry to all Madeleine's fans out there. I've been pretty busy with the start of the semester and have neglected the website. The family is adjusting well to the new routine. I've taken to napping in the afternoon with Madeleine while Jon is teaching. I find it makes my split shift much easier. Madeleine seems to find new ways of entertaining us all the time. Just the other night...was it 3 a.m.?...she sat up and started naming all the animals she could and following their name by the sound they make. Ok, seriously, for example she likes to walk across the living room on her tippy toes; she takes us by the hand and drags us over to the 'video' corner of the living room saying 'Bi' (for Bambi - her favorite), gets us to take the video cassette from the shelf and then drags us over to the VCR; she does a noisy slurping sound when we sing 'Je vais à l'étable' because Carmen Campagne does the same at the end of the chorus; she'll take her stuffed pig and touch it to the pig on her animal poster to show me she knows they are the same; and when she's tired she'll go to the bedroom and climb into bed by herself (of course she expects us to follow with a bottle, but there is no struggle.) We'll have to make more videos soon. As soon as I find time that is. Below is our sweetheart shaking her hands and saying 'Yea' as she does when she is happy or proud of herself. Go baby!
September 6, 2006 Bonne fete Gabrielle!
September 4, 2006 The semester has started here at PNU and we are slowly easing back into our work routine. I'm teaching writing this fall from Monday to Friday in the mornings and Monday to Thursday at 17:30. Jon's schedule is all over the place, but luckily, both our administrators were good enough to let us coordinate our hours so that we can share Madeleine 'duty' during the week. Ideally, she will never step inside a daycare and will go straight from our overprotective arms to kindergarten.
Our baby's healthy and playful again. As proof, here she is having a ball in the mosquito net that covers our bed. Yes, a mosquito net! You heard me correctly. For some unknown reason, September is the worst time of year for those awful pests! We kill a dozen a day at least and still find a bunch skulking around the mosquito net in the morning. We don't want to use any chemical products because of Madeleine, but we have a neat little device shaped like a tennis racquet that zaps the mosquitoes on contact. Sometimes the result will be a loud 'pop' and then we get a smell like hair burning. Nasty, but it does the job!
August 30, 2006 Madeleine has had a fever for the past 4 days but it seems to have broken today. We gave her cooling baths, kept her in comfy clothes and make sure she drank tons of water. She might be getting roseola, which is common at this age. This means that we should be seeing spots soon (real ones) on her torso. Here's our little patient today.
August 26, 2006 Happy birthday Jon! Today is Madeleine's daddy's birthday. As a gift, she was sweet and adorable all day and didn't make any fuss during our dinner at Jon's favorite Indian food restaurant -- Ganga!
This is Jon's second
birthday with our little angel and I thought it would be fun to post a
comparison picture.
Here are a couple more pictures of Jon's fun birthday dinner. First, the birthday boy himself. Then, his honored guests.
I realize I haven't posted much lately. I'll try to catch up in the next few days. In the meantime, here are some photos.
Above is Madeleine in a sweet watermelon outfit that was worn at some time by her Hearst cousin Stephanie. Of course I had to get a shot of her dressed in it in front of her big and colorful fruit poster. Hey Nat! Does this bring back any memories? Below is a shot of Madeleine and I, with Chang-hoon, his mother and his father. I helped Chang-hoon get ready for his move to a Canadian high school by giving him a little background into my homeland's history and geography. His mother, Sunmi, was a student of mine several times in the past. A few days before they left for Sidney, BC, we went out to a great restaurant built in a traditional wood fashion that looked a lot like a Buddhist temple. Of course, Madeleine charmed everyone from our dinner party, to the parties in the adjoining rooms to the wait staff. She enjoyed running up and down their large dining room squealing with delight.
August 7, 2006 It was REALLY hot today. Wanna know just how hot? It was so hot, our Egyptian friend Ali said he preferred going hungry at lunch time rather than leaving his air conditioned office to get something to eat. Now THAT'S hot! Usually Ali likes hot sunny days and they seem to suit him. We ran into him around 5 o'clock when the heat of the day was starting to become bearable. He took the two photos below (except the one with himself in it) with his very slim Sony digital camera. The first shows Jon (wearing his snazzy $2.00 Panama hat) and Madeleine (wearing her $30.00 oh my goodness all baby clothes are so expensive, Aussie hat). The photo was taken on campus near a little coffee shop amid a garden area. The second is a group shot with Ali on the left. And the third is Madeleine and I in the back yard of our apt building. Ali lives in the same building as us, on the second floor and is an experimental physicist here at PNU. He promised to make us some real Egyptian food soon. We can't wait!
August 6, 2006 Yesterday we did a few errands and stopped at my hairdresser's salon because Jon wanted a haircut. FYI haircuts are really cheap in Korea. A precision cut by the top stylist in the shop is about $12 for men and $15 for women. Well, Madeleine was in cute mode, and the incredibly sweet lilac one-piece and her blond curls did not help either. While waiting for Jon, Madeleine and I spend a lot of time at the shop front window looking at a tiny little pond/fountain that had 4 little goldfish in it. Of course this meant she was in full view of folks walking past the shop. I lost count of how many stopped in their tracks to stare at Madeleine. Not many curly blond/red babies in Busan. I should also mention that after we arrived my hairdresser went out and came back with a gift for Madeleine: a colorful little sundress and matching sun hat. People are so nice! August 4, 2006 The rainy season has given way to a hot, sweltering, inescapable heat. The good news is it's easy to dry our clothes on the clothes line. The bad news is our electricity bill will skyrocket due to our A/C running 24/7. Madeleine's keeping cool in a fashionable sundress that Michelle Forbes had given us while watching her favorite singer Carmen Campagne performing the Fruit and Yogurt jig. Michelle, if you ever read this blog I hope you realize just how much we've appreciated getting Mariève's clothes and we're going to miss the hand-me-downs when Madeleine's outgrown the last of them.
In today's video Madeleine is showing off her cow imitation "meuhhh" and getting pretty excited about Carmen Campagne's song. July 23, 2006 Happy Birthday to our niece Stéphanie! Last year she spent her birthday in Paris and went up to the top of the Eiffel Tower. This year, she will get her fondest wish come true: having a birthday party at home with her friends and family.
On a sadder note, Madeleine maimed a mouse this morning. Not a real mouse, nor the computer mouse. No, it was a pencil mouse. It's a wooden figurine stuck at the end of a pencil. It had two little ball-shaped feet and hands attached by flimsy elastic string. (See photo below.) Well, a few weeks ago she pulled off the legs and started crying uncontrollably. I wasn't sure if it was my reaction to her pulling off the legs (I was surprised and said "Oh no!") that made her cry or if she was upset that she had done it. But this morning, she was sitting on my lap while I chatted online with Nathalie and she suddenly started crying again and I looked down and saw she had pulled off an arm. Jon says he would react the same when he was young. Looks like we have a tender hearted child. Just to make sure this traumatizing event doesn't repeat itself, we secretly pulled off the last arm. Let's just hope those ears are glued on well.
July 15, 2006 When it doesn't rain it's still humid and the heat of the day is almost unbearable. I remember the summer I was pregnant with Madeleine (but didn't know it) I'd sit in front of a fan on the floor in a wrung out t-shirt. This year, for the first time ever during our stay in Korea, we have an air conditioner. It's old, it barely works, but if we turn it on max and close all the doors to the other rooms, it feels like someone left the door to the fridge open. Yea! I went out with Emiko for dinner in Haeundae, at the Indian food restaurant. It was her birthday June 24th but we hadn't had a chance to celebrate it together yet. Whenever it's her birthday or mine, we dress up and go to a nice restaurant, leaving the husbands at home with the children, and have a REAL uninterrupted conversation. You could say Emiko and I really only have two conversations a year. Here is a photo of me toasting Emiko.
I think Madeleine might be getting tired of being mobbed in the streets, stores, well anywhere in public. She's started pushing people's hands away when they try to hold her hand and positively panics when they try to pick her up or when they get between us and her. I'm not sure what to do about it. I could dress her as a boy, hide her curly blond-red hair under a hat, get her some sunglasses and keep her stroller hood down low, but it's hot! We'll keep you posted on her progress in the limelight. Looks like Madeleine's little cousin is keeping cool (and clean) back in Canada. Mariève has way more hair than Madeleine had at 9 months! I'm so jealous. Apparently, she can grunt syllables already; if her sisters say "Grant" she grunts once, but three times if they say "Sté-pha-nie". - a little vocal prodigy!
July 10, 2006 WEATHER UPDATE It was raining poodles and kittens all night and all morning. When Jon came home he said it was a typhoon - but only a small one since it wasn't too windy. Here's a short video clip of Madeleine standing by the patio doors, excited about all the rain. Below's a shot of our little bag lady - teabag that is. If you try to give her a teabag (a cold one mom, don't worry) she won't touch the damp bag but will hold it by the paper tag attached to the string. She can carry that teabag around for hours!
July 9, 2006 It rained for 18 hours straight...no, it poured for 18 hours straight. We had to run the humidifier all afternoon at maximum strength. Thank goodness for that piece of technology or else we'd have mold growing all over the walls (as actually happened to the tenants of this very apartment, before Michelle and Patrick lived here.) At 11 a.m. it had stopped so we dropped everything and made a beeline for the door. You gotta get out while you can during the rainy season. The same goes for laundry since we hang ours out to dry. We went to eat at the local Turkish restaurant called 'Kebapistan' and had hummus and falafel sandwiches. Yummy! The owner is a sweetheart of a guy, from ...well Turkey, who met and married a local Korean woman. Then we headed to Starbucks because Jon had some correction to do and he swears it's the best place for him to concentrate on school stuff. Madeleine slept through most of our outing but woke up in time to delight the patrons who were all vying to get her attention. Back at home we let Madeleine played in the common room. Someone had left a ball and she had a great time picking it, throwing it and falling on it. Listen to us say 'debout' (means stand up in French) and she does! She's only been walking on her own for two weeks but her agility has soared! Am I bragging? You betcha!
July 7, 2006 Today was Madeleine's one year check-up. Like everything else I've ever done it was late. This time three months late. We've got to go back next month -- yippee! This visit finally put to rest any debate or doubt about our bathroom scales. If you've ever wondered why we haven't posted a growth chart or anything, here's the reason. She's been between 10 and 11 kg (22 and 24 lbs) since Christmas. We thought our scales were busted, so we were too ashamed to post the weights. My mother got us a little wall growth chart to measure her against. I started measuring her in the spring and she was exceptionally tall -- 30 ins (76 cm) -- until I measured her one day and she had shrunk! Then I realized she had always been standing on her tip-toes. The official truth can now be told. Down in her permanent record is her true weight and height as of this day. Height: 80.0 cm (31.5 in) Weight: 10.2 kg (22.5 lb)-- dry diaper, too! According to percentile charts, she's taller than 75% of girls her age but only 40% heavier. She also got her MMR vaccine. (For those of you worried about the safety and efficacy of the vaccine, check these links: link #1, link #2, and link #3). The nurse did a remarkably good job with the shot too. Madeleine only cried a little and quickly recovered. Poor Madeleine seemed to remember the hospital and was antsy and anxious the entire time we were there, especially in the doctor's weighting room. She's supposed to get a fever and have some achy muscles. So far, so good -- no fever and no aches or pains. Then again it's only been six and half hours. We'll keep you posted. Luckily, they had a new play area there! Madeleine took off her shoes and joined the other children in play. She squealed with delight when three of them ran by her playing tag! She loved all of the excitement and action! Our old friend Sanghee wasn't there, but a nurse, Kyoung-ah, was certainly able and led us through the now familiar routine. July 5, 2006 The monsoon has arrived full force. Yesterday it rained hard non-stop it seems. It makes it hard to take Madeleine out - and she WANTS to go out and walk everyday! It also means that swarms of famished mosquitoes invade the apartment from dusk till dawn - hey, just like that Tarantino movie.... Luckily, today was simply overcast, cool, breezy with slight drizzle once in a while. I took advantage of the weather to visit Emiko and June her son who is almost two. Madeleine, who is barely 15 months is almost as tall as he is. They played well together and especially liked June's Japanese telephone that sings a little "Moshi-moshi" song (Hello-hello) and would wave their arms together to the music. In the video clip below they are sharing Othello playing pieces. Now that I'm off for the summer, we'll be able to meet Emiko and June for playdates on a regular basis. Jon and I worry that she doesn't have much interaction with other kids so we'll try to create as many opportunities for her as possible. And if no kids her age are available, Jon intends to borrow people's pets.
When we can home I changed Madeleine from her play clothes to a pretty pink onsie and jean jumper. She went straight to her 'library' to have some quiet time with her favorite books. Below she's enjoying her 'Fait Dodo David' book. She had such a pretty pose when I took this shot that I had to put it up on the web site. This picture also made me realize that I've never combed her hair. Oh well, the mussed windblown look suits her.
June 27, 2006
We feel like Pierre (Jo's brother who lives in Paris) had a reverse birthday this year. He sent a whole bunch of French children's books to Madeleine, which she loves already even though they are for ages 1 to 5+. Here are a few candid shots of Madeleine enjoying her surprise gifts! One of the books is especially colorful and we keep it in the diaper bag in the stroller because it's the best book to keep her attention for long periods of time. She sure loves the little pink pig picture and points to it over and over again wanting maman and papa to say: cochon - oink oink. June 25, 2006 The 23rd was Korea's last World Cup game. Sadly they were eliminated from the tournament by Switzerland on that day. We were woken up shortly after 4:00 a.m. by the collective national groan of disappointment when the Swiss scored their first goal. We were woken up several times after that by screams and cheers that sounded for all the world like the screams had had a rug pulled out from under them. They were short-lived and just ended too abruptly. We knew Korea had had a good shot, but didn't score. Okay, okay! Jo just poked me and reminded me that this is a web site about Madeleine and not about World Cup. Well, it is Madeleine's first World Cup, so I guess that counts. On the 23rd, everyone dressed up in their national team colors -- predominately red -- or wore t-shirts with things like "Again Dream" written on them or "Korea Red Devils." The last time I bought diapers, the package came with a little baby Red Devil's t-shirt and do rag.
"Korea Fighting" is a Konglish phrase meaning "Let's go, Korea!" that you might shout at a sporting event. They also use "Fighting!" when they have something difficult to do either individually or collectively like overcoming the 1997 financial crisis or doing their English homework. Her do rag has "Pil-seung Ko-re-a!" written on it in Hangeul -- the Korean writing script. That phrase is the Korean version of "Korea Fighting!" It's funny that they spelled Korea phonetically in Hangeul instead of using the Korean word for it, "Dae-han Min-guk." June 19~21, 2006 The Marshall Trio has just returned from a short but lovely trip to the island of Cheju, the southern most island in the country. It's so far south, in fact, that it's in a different climate zone. Most of Korea is located in the temperate zone whilst Jeju Island is part of the subtropical zone. It's a popular destination for honeymooners and families. n0// ◄▬ Madeleine's contribution to the blog! We stayed at the KAL (Korean Airline Hotel) right on the waterfront. The staff was great. The first night we stayed in an ondol room (Korean style floor furnishings) which was great for Madeleine since everything was at her level. However our room faced the large fountain area in front of the main doors and it seemed to attract a lot of people at night, so it wasn't as quiet as we'd hope. We kindly asked the concierge to move us to a quieter room in the morning and they upgraded us to an ocean view suite on the top floor! Wow. Was it ever nice and unexpected! Let's give you an idea of what it was like:
It was an eventful trip for all of us. We visited the lovely Teddy Bear Museum where Madeleine was delighted the breadth and depth of teddy bears on display. She oohed and kooed at all of the cute fuzzy bears. Jo and I enjoyed the dioramas of the Last Supper, fashion show, and wedding. Here are a couple of pictures for your enjoyment.
Perhaps our favorite place to visit was the Botanical Gardens, because it had real grass! Madeleine loved walking around in it! In fact, she ran, walked, stumbled, tumbled, crawled all the while squealing with delight. Here are some pictures and video:
Here are some other pictures from the lovely lovely gardens:

June 8, 2006 Congratulations to Gabrielle, Madeleine's eldest maternal cousin, who won second prize in a government sponsored math contest. Hope those math genes crossed over to our side! So far, the only math that Madeleine seems to know or care about is that bunnybear + poupée = fun.
June 6, 2006 Today is a holiday in Korea. Another one? Yes. No classes. Jon and I took advantage of the great weather to head down to the area in front of PNU to shop and have a coffee. Madeleine slept through most of it. Before we headed out, I took a picture of her in a cute lilac dress with her daddy on our apartment balcony. Tomorrow is the last day of classes. Final exams follow for university students. For Jon and I that means tallying up grades and getting ready to enter them into the computer. Lately, all Madeleine wants to do is walk around with one of us holding her hands (both of them or else she gets upset) which is getting hard on the old lower back! She wants to walk in the apt., around Starbucks or other restaurants, around the yard, in the building hallways, ...you name it. We figure she is really close to walking. Stay tuned for videos of the big event.
May 31, 2006 Still not walking, but pretty darn good at standing. Today was election day in Korea so no classes. Jon's down with my (former) throat infection, but that didn't keep me from dragging him out to get a haircut. We dressed Madeleine in a cute outfit she got for Christmas, but hadn't worn yet because it was always too cold. Now it seems too warm. Oh well, the hat looks great - and it hid the mosquito bites. That's right, mosquito season is upon us and that means we installed the net over the bed today. Poor Madeleine won't have to wake up bitten again!
May 29, 2006 It's Laurel's last night in Korea. Yesterday we took her to our favorite tofu restaurant called 'Dubu Maeul' which means Tofu Village. Laurel loved it! We sat at the same table that my mom and I sat at when she came for Madeleine's birth.
Here's a photo of Madeleine and I at the restaurant.
May 27, 2006 It's raining...cold rain; non-stop rain. We were going to take Laurel to Pomo Temple but obviously, we need a change of plans. She says she want to go shopping, but the best and most fun shopping here is outdoors in the markets. Well, there's always the underground markets linked to the subway stations in Somyeon and Nampodong. Darn this rain! Below is a photo of Madeleine and Laurel in a 'rock garden' need a small temple atop the mountain behind the university. They took a cable car to get there. At least they had sun for that day and we also had beautiful weather for Haeundae Beach.
May 24, 2006 This is Madeleine's Grand-papa Chauvin working at his next masterpiece. He's recently taken up painting as a way to relax during his retirement. He told everyone to expect something to be hung on a wall for our Christmas present. Jon and I are hoping to hang ours on the wall of our Paris apartment. What could be more perfect? Love the beret dad!
We also got a recent picture of Nathalie and Mariève relaxing in my parents' home. That little baby sure looks content. In fact, so does her mom. We're hoping Mariève's webpage will be available soon!
May 23, 2006
I'm still struggling
with this throat infection. Monday, I had to use sign language to teach my
conversation classes. It was pretty funny at times. However, I'm
determined that this will not keep me from showing Laurel a good time in
Korea. So today, we went to Haeundae Beach to visit the aquarium. Laurel
said it was even better than the one in Vancouver. Madeleine was totally
thrilled to see all those wonderful sea creatures. The penguins would swim
right up to her, and so would the sharks for that matter. Even though
there was very thick glass between us and the sharks, it still made me
nervous and after a few minutes it was enough. Enjoy the pictures!
May 17, 2006 Madeleine found part of a Halloween costume that Michelle Forbes had left us. It's a black cat that comes in two pieces: body and head. When I tried to put the head part on Madeleine, she didn't like it and wanted to pull it off immediately, but when I showed her what she looked like in the mirror, she was fascinated and wouldn't take it off after that. She was so funny. She'd sit and stare at herself with those little cat ears and make little throat sounds. Wish I would have gotten those on tape. When we took her picture she kept bouncing on the bed. It was hard to get a shot that wasn't blurry. Jon also got a great close up of her once she had calmed down.
May 16, 2006 We received some nice group photos of the Ayres girls. The one below is especially nice since all eyes were on the camera. What a gorgeous group!
May 15, 2006 Today is PNU's Foundation Day, so no classes for Jon and I. Laurel, my best friend from Canada is arriving Thursday May 18th. She's coming to visit for 2 weeks. I promise plenty of photos and updates! We started dressing Madeleine in her summer clothes. Well, I should say Mariève's summer clothes. Now pay attention. When Michelle and Patrick left Korea, they gave us their daughter Mariève's hand-me-downs. Michelle had great taste in clothes so we were really grateful. Madeleine is still wearing some of her clothes (see picture below). Now, the clothes will be handed down to Nathalie's Mariève. How weird is that?
May 10, 2006 Here are some new Mariève pictures. We've heard that the first couple of nights were rough, but that the bundle of joy has now settled into a nice sleep & eat pattern that lets Nathalie gets some rest. Gabrielle and Stephanie are staying with their grand-papa and grand-maman Chauvin to give the mom and baby a break. May 8, 2006 Happy parents day, y'all! That's right instead of Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Grandparent's Day, South Korea celebrates Children's Day and Parent's Day. And what a day it is! The corners are filled with flower vendors and in a twist, well, you can read all about it yourself... Click here. In other news, Madeleine had a terrible encounter with hermit crab at GS Mart today. They had a display of hermit crabs in little colorful plastic shells. I thought they were the most ridiculous thing I'd ever seen and tarried a little too long next to it. I gave the young man minding the display a chance to hand Madeleine one of the smallest ones! Almost immediately, it latched on to the fleshy part that separates your thumb from your hand and almost immediately Madeleine began to howl. I realized immediately what had happened, but the little thing wouldn't come off! Of course I could've wrenched it off of her, but I didn't want to hurt Madeleine any more than she already was and I didn't want to hurt the crab either. Madeleine wouldn't let me see her hand and kept squirming away from me. So I had to pin her between my legs, grab her hand and the crab with one hand and try and pries the pincers apart with my finger nail. Finally it broke free. She cried all the way through the check out. She wouldn't let me get a good look at the wound, but I could see blood -- the first time she's bled. Just now, she cried when I looked at it again, otherwise I'd have posted a picture. Perhaps tomorrow. May 7, 2006 She has a name: Mariève Jacqueline Ayres! How lovely. It's much better than the name I heard in my dream. Last night I dreamt of being at her birth, holding her (a treat - even in a dream) and hearing Grant tell me her name was going to be Besan Tul (or something awful like that). Trying to think of something positive to say, I said: well at least we can nickname her B for short. (Remember this was a dream and so it's not really supposed to make sense.) I showed Madeleine Mariève's pictures and she said: be be be be ... (which is her word for baby). How fun! May 6, 2006
Later that same day ... May 5, 2006 The blessed day has arrived! Nathalie gave birth to a healthy baby girl (8lbs 4oz) at 7:40 a.m. central time in Canada (8:40 p.m. Korean time). The baby still doesn't have a name, but she does have 10 fingers and 10 toes...and a mop of black hair! We'll have photos as soon as grand-maman Chauvin gets back from Notre-Dame Hospital. She and Grant attended the birth. Wait, that sounds too passive. They attended Nathalie as she gave birth, massaging her back, helping with her breathing, holding her hand and pressing cool washcloths on her face between contraction . Nathalie had a midwife deliver her baby - no doctor. Stay tuned for upcoming pics. We forgot to mention before that not only is this Buddha's lunar birthday, in Korea May 5th is Children's Day. Wow. Little 'Elle' Ayres will be doubly blessed. Wait! Triply celebrated as May 5 is also known in Mexico as Cinco de Mayo. Wow. Born on 3 holidays at once. It beats Madeleine's St. Patrick's Day arrival. May 5, 2006 Happy Buddha's Birthday. Last year we took Madeleine up to Pomosa Temple near our house for this event - although the date was different since it runs on the lunar calendar. We've moved near the university campus since then and I'm not sure we're up to the 'temple madness' involved in making the trek. Traffic is crazy and unless you have a police escort (like we did) it can be frustrating just making it to the gate. Is Nathalie going to give birth on Buddha's Birthday? Maybe the baby's name can be Elle Buddha Ayres. Maybe Nat should have shopped at the Buddha Belly Maternity Clothes shop. Ok, enough Buddha references. Nat, any contractions? Cramps? Anything? At least send us a name update. May 3, 2006 Nathalie's uterus is still, well still. Jo's sister has passed her due date. That baby seems to be quite content to stay where she is. Maybe she's waiting for the Ayres-Chauvin clan to make up their mind on a name. Nathalie and Jo like 'Beatrice' (which means 'happy, bringer of joy'), but it seemed to have been vetoed by Gabrielle who doesn't want her baby sister to share a name with a cottage cheese brand. 'Elle' is the favorite of the moment, but last we heard Audrey, Chelsea, Véronic (Jon likes it), Joanie, et Mariève were being considered. Jon would like to veto Joanie (too much like Joanie loves Chachi of the Happy Days TV show)and Jo thinks Chelsea sounds too American. . Grand-papa Chauvin seems to think since May is the month of Mary, Mariève should be a strong contender. Mariève was also the name of Michelle and Patrick's daughter. We always thought it was quite sweet. In other news, Michel and France have set a wedding date. Those kids don't mess around. Expect great joy and celebration on December 30th of this year! April 28, 2006 Madeleine's maternal aunt Nathalie's due date is HERE! (Say that quick five times in a row!) Everyone is wondering when the newest Chauvin-Ayes child will be born. Nathalie has had a healthy problem free pregnancy and her deliveries are usually quick. Here's the latest Nat pic taken on Easter weekend (see the egg coloring tray in her hand).
Jon and I talk about the newest Ayres to be every day. This will be their third daughter - how lucky can you get! Think of the hand-me-down possibilities! Here's a recent picture of Stephanie (on the left) and Gabrielle hamming it up for the camera. As you can see, Grant and Nathalie produce very pretty girls!
True to form, Nathalie has the baby room ready and even seems to have organized the baby's wardrobe for the next 6 months.
Have a look at the beautiful room. I've been drooling over that gorgeous crib. Poor Madeleine had to be content with a padded box!
Here's a picture of the expectant parents. What I was really wanting to put up is a picture of Nathalie's beautiful pregnant stomach - but she wouldn't let me! Oh well. We'll be waiting for the BIG NEWS!
April 27, 2006 Copious amounts of 'nose drool' are still found on Madeleine and anyone else who wants a kiss. However, as sick as she is, our baby is always ready to play 'hide and show myself' with daddy. In the video you'll hear Jon say: "Où est Madeleine?" which means "Where is Madeleine?" April 22, 2006 The Marshall Trio is down...with a cold. Daddy got it. Then Madeleine caught it. And now mommy's starting to suffer. Needless to say it was pretty quiet around the Trio Household today. Here's a picture of Madeleine fallen asleep (last night) on daddy and her favorite dog. Poor Jon. For a good part of the night, this is the ONLY way she would sleep. Jon spent a good chunk of the wee hours holding her like this on the sofa while I snored away in bed.
Congratulations to Michel and France who got engaged yesterday. Michel proposed at dinner in a castle they were staying at near Paris.
Michel surprised us all with his hidden romantic side. While France was away 'powdering her nose' he asked the waitress to bring two glasses of champagne and to place the ring in front of France - nice dessert! Luckily for him, she accepted and now they will live happily ever after! Félicitations au beau couple! April 16, 2006
Video Trio: only for real fans of
silliness.
Happy Easter everyone! Our apologies. We haven't updated much lately. We'll try to make it up. Korea hasn't really adopted the western holiday of Easter yet. Christmas is in, and so is Valentines Day (with a twist), but Christians here celebrate in church. By the way, Korea does have its own romantic holiday called Chilsok. Poor Madeleine, with her anti-sugar Buddhist father and health conscious agnostic mom, didn't fare too well in the old 'chocolate bunny' department this year. Luckily, Jon's co-worker Susan donned a pair of long ears and left an Easter surprise for Madeleine outside our door this morning. (See firsts for a picture.) Our little treasure's been cutting more teeth last week. She's been drooling rivulets again and had been chewing on her fingers and hands every chance she got. We had been more focused on the fact that her appetite seemed to be low; she's refuse to eat her usual favorites and we worried that she was becoming a finicky eater. Grand-maman Chauvin was wiser. She kept asking: 'Any new teeth yet?' One day, I was tickling Madeleine on the rug and when she tossed her head back and laughed I saw...oh my goodness, not just one, but three budding teeth. For you technically minded folks, he's a rundown of the dental progression: Her lower central incisors came out together. Next (and this was a surprise) her right upper lateral incisor popped out. And now, both upper central incisors are coming as well as the left upper lateral incisor. We will be keeping a close look at those swollen gums.
April 15, 2006 Hello to Michel and France who are in Paris for Easter. Jo managed to convince them to paint our apartment in return for a cheap vacation. Luckily for us they accepted. France could be an interior decorator. They are now blazing a sightseeing trail through gay 'ol Pa-ree. Here's a picture of France climbing those famous Montmartre stairs.
April 3, 2006 April 1, 2006 Madeleine is finally walking! 4 steps. She went from Jo's knees to the sofa edge. Of course I just had to put that in here. Look at the date; that's right - gotcha. Nope. We have a super crawler. A 'look I can stand up not touching the edge for 15 sec.' champion. And she's even started to push herself up from the floor to a standing position. However, she hasn't joined the bipedal community yet. Spring is in Korea and that means we can finally stop bundling up the baby as if we're heading into an ice age. Today was so mild she only wore a wind-breaker in her Jeep stroller. The trees are in full bloom on campus and we have a limited number of days to dwell among the cherry blossom clouds. Below is a close-up of Madeleine watching Baby Shakespeare. Once again we really want to thank Dominique (Jo's cousin) for giving us her Baby Einstein video collection. They are worth their weight in gold. Mind you, we limit the TV worship to once a day. The videos are about 30 minutes which gives either parents enough time to either do the dishes or get ready for classes and the baby hand-off.
March 26, 2006 Yesterday, we met friends for a small dinner party at one of our favorite restaurants called 'Dooboo Ma-eul' which means 'Tofu Village' in English. We wanted to share Madeleine turning one with others, since last weekend both mommy and baby weren't up to a big affair. Thank you to all who came and for the lovely gifts you brought. Our guests were Emiko, Won-gil and their youngest boy called June (see hospital journal for more on them). Below is a picture of June and Madeleine both tearful. Lover's spat? Who knows. Two seconds later they were all smiles.
Also in attendance were Kiomi and Q (friends we met through Emiko and Won-gil) also came with both their boys, but only Kona was awake. We met the lovely Makiko, who was visiting Kiomi and Q from Japan. We also had an old friend from Jo's first days in Korea, Moon Kyoung-hee. Actually, Jo and Kyoung-hee met the first day she got off the plane, believe it or not. Kyoung-hee babysat Jack and Reilly for two weeks when we went to Canada for Christmas in 1998. She also helped us find our apartment in Namsan-dong (the one we lived in for 5 years before moving on campus). Seok-hee was also there, and we've known her for as long as we've worked at PNU. She was a student then (she was the most helpful teacher's assistant ever) and now is running the admin office! She knew Emiko because they took hanji classes together. (It's a small world!) We were also lucky to have some of Jon's co-workers: Susan Pompian and Paul Hagerty. Paul came with his wife Amy (sorry, I can't remember her Korean name) who is pictured below having a sweet moment with Madeleine. We both agree Amy would make a terrific mother to some lucky child! True fans of this site will remember that the Marshall Trio attended Paul and Amy's wedding last summer.
March 19, 2006
Three clips for you today. The first is
only 4 seconds long. Although feeling better, I still have a lingering
cough and Jon caught one on camera. The second is one of Madeleine's
favorite games: feeding me rice crackers then trying to fish them out. The last is singing happy
birthday to Madeleine.
March 17, 2006 Today is the anniversary of Madeleine's birth -- Happy Birthday! -- and although we both have classes today (and Madeleine is still fighting her cold), we'll be celebrating from the time we got up until we go to bed tonight. It's a Marshall trio birthday day! Stay tuned for more birthday news.
Grab your partner & dance a happy jig!
A sweet birthday kiss! March 15, 2006 All three of the women in my life are sick or laid up. Jo caught a wicked cold that started with a painful sore throat on Sunday. She's had to cancel her classes and lay low. Unfortunately, Madeleine has now joined her mommy and is feverish, with a runny nose and spent half the night waking up crying. Jo was getting better, but looked like death warmed over this morning. Madeleine's birthday is in two days. Years later people will ask her "What did you get for your first birthday?" and she'll be able to answer: a COLD! Don't we feel like great parents. Looks like we'll have to postpone the party. Oh well... of mice and men... And as noted below, my mom has recently had some surgery and is hobbling around for her birthday. March 14, 2006 Happy Birthday Mom! (That's Grandma Marshall for the uninitiated.) She's recently been laid up by some elective surgery, so we're sending her good healing as well as celebratory vibrations this day! You should, too. Below is a photo of my mom having a chat with Madeleine at Christmas.
Happy White Day! I should have bought Jo chocolate today, according to Korean culture, but we go by the North American 14th of February so I didn't even get her a Mars bar. That's ok actually, since Jo's sworn off chocolate. If you know her well, you're probably in shock, since it's one of her favorite edibles. I think Jo's four food groups are: cheese & bread, coffee & chocolate, veggies & sauces, & "others vegetarian stuff" (grudgingly admitting fruit, pasta and lentils). I decided that Madeleine should not eat refined sugar so Jo's decided to try to cut out chocolate from her life early. The way she's talking about it, you'd think she was cutting off a thumb. Here's a picture of our shopping trip at the grocery store on Sunday. Olive oil, organic veggies, formula & diapers. The baby stuff took up 2/3 of the bill. Welcome to parenthood.
March 10, 2006 Our baby makes so many sounds that we've stopped counting. In the next clip you can see that she practically has created her own language. Jo's dad said he heard of a theory that babies have all the languages of the world inside them, and that at this stage they try out sounds. If the folks around them react to that sound then the baby will tend to repeat it more than the other languages' sounds. Fun isn't it? March 9, 2006 Madeleine has quite the repertoire of words so far. Let's see, apart from mama, papa, and bébé (baby in French), she also can say Oui-oui (the name of a character in her books), Ça pu (it stinks), caaaa (her version of 'cat'), bye bye and ah oh (from the David book). She also has what we call 'temporary word' that she'll say for a day or so and then forget or not be interested in saying anymore. Unfortunately, the 'Pas capable' from the Carmen Campagne song disappeared soon after she amazed everybody with it.
March 5, 2006 Madeleine might musically inclined. She responds to music with great interest and if she likes the tune, will wave her arms to the beat with great enthusiasm. We know she likes to sing (see the Camen Campagne clips) so while grocery shopping we bought her a tambourine. Hey, for 4 bucks, you can't go wrong there. We thought she'd like it because she's already proven to be keen on drumming. Her aim has gotten better but notice where daddy keeps the stainless steel bowl. When we say Madeleine has a lot of range - we mean striking range. A man can never be too careful. March 4, 2006 The spring semester has begun at PNU. Freshman anxiety and exuberance is in the air. I love first year students. They're so shiny, innocent and uncertain - wide-eyed, trying to fit in the university scene. Then, in the fall, they already have that...been here, know that attitude. Still great students, but their shiny eager aura have grown fainter. Madeleine is adapting as well as she can to the new schedule. Poor baby had a stomachache due to brown rice with mixed into her food. Feeding a baby a balanced nutritional ovo-lacto-vegetarian meals is a challenge. She does love organic mini rice cakes. We've determined that she no longer likes yogurt - very disappointing! She is a huge fan of homemade soup and mash potatoes. Once in a while we treat her to some organic molasses teething cookies sent by grandma Micheline. That's a special treat. Madeleine's range of movements since she's been 'allowed' to play on the floor is growing at an alarming rate. She went from a baby who would quietly sit in one place, playing contentedly for hours, to a roaming child who finally crawled and wants to be standing all the time (more on that coming soon in 'Firsts'). It's incredible what can happen in a month's time. February 27, 2006 The spring semester at PNU starts March 2nd (because March 1st is a national holiday). Jon's been practicing his teaching skills, as you can see below. We're both happy that Madeleine loves books. She's a big fan of Caillou (thank you tante Diane) and will sit quietly turning the pages over and over. She's also big time into the 'David' Series. There's one page in particular, where you see David sitting with a big grin and dreamy look, wearing an obviously very full diaper. The word on the page are "Ça pue!" (which means 'It stinks'. When Madeleine sees that page she says: Pa Pue. Close enough for us!
February 20, 2006
Bonne fête mom! Je t'aime.
February 12, 2006 Little Pink Riding Hood (or little pink kangaroo) went out with her daddy. Although the Kozy looks a little strange with Madeleine facing out rather that in, believe it or not, this is one of her favorite positions. She gets to see where daddy's going and if she's really lucky, she can get her hands on stuff. On another note, Madeleine has been a fussy eater lately. Can she sense the end of breastfeeding looming in the near future? Whatever the reason, she seems to spit out more than she ingests. Dr. Sears' Baby book recommended broccoli, so out of desperation I made a crème of broccoli soup from scratch, thickened with Pablum. Guess what? She ate it all. This baby is a gourmet.
Madeleine's new bed will be ready on Monday. Monday night is a big night for this co-sleeping family. Monday night we will see how Madeleine will fare in her own bed. Just one week short of 11 months, her mother and father are finally ready to give her her own space. Stay tuned for updates. February 6, 2006 What a weekend! Some of our pipes froze and we were out of hot water for two days. Makes you really appreciate the basic necessities of life. Heat, hot water and the Internet. Since we weren't sure when the pipes would thaw, we decided to go to a Korean public bathhouse to ...bathe. Usually, you go to these wonderful places and the men and women are segregated into different areas, usually different floors. However, that wouldn't have been fun for Jon, so we decided to rent a 'family bathhouse' which is just like a plain hotel room with a very large bathroom with big soaking tub that gets hot mineral water piped in. For 23,000 won you can bath, scrub and rinse for a total of 2 hours. Madeleine really got into it. We had brought her bath toys and were able for the first time to all fit in the tub. Then, that night, the hot water came back on. On Monday it snowed...(see pictures in 'Firsts') and Jon's team won the Super bowl! Congratulations to all Pittsburg Stealers fans!
Taking it nice and easy this week. The Marshalls are waking late and hanging out together at the house. We're slowly taking Madeleine through the weaning process. She eats three square meals a day and gets about 3 bottles of goat milk based formula (one mid-nightish). She breastfeeds mostly for comfort now and my milk supply is diminishing. I have to say I'm going to miss nursing Madeleine. Lots of my friends couldn't BF for one reason or another so I feel pretty lucky to have had the chance. Weaning Madeleine also means she's growing up and no longer a newborn. Maybe weaning is going to be harder on mom than baby.
January 28-29, 2006 This is a big holiday in Korea, although this year everyone's a bit depressed because it falls on a weekend, which means no extended vacation. On this day you should go to the local bathhouse and 'scrub your dirt' (exfoliate and bath extensively) to start off the year fresh. You also eat a special soup and bow to your parents formally to show respect. Most Koreans travel to their grandparents' home or to the house of the head of the family (eldest brother), eat tons of food, drink and catch up with family members. Hard on the women's backs and feet; hard on the men's liver and lungs. The Marshalls are having a quiet weekend with Princess Madeleine (couldn't resist: she's so precious). For the big fans we've got a quattro of videos of her mini-highness at play. In the first, Jon is trying to get Madeleine to share a toy with encouraging results. You can also see Jon practicing his 'Français' with his favorite (and non-judgmental) listener.
January 22, 2006 Brunch at Emiko's. In the photo below, left to right, June (6.5 months older than Madeleine), Emiko his mom, Lisa (ex-coworker and good friend, myself and Madeleine as Minnie Mouse. Actually that cute Disney outfit was chosen by Stephanie and Gabrielle (my nieces) during their trip to Euro Disney.
January 21, 2006 Jon mentioned in his last blog that Madeleine had finally taken a liking to solid food ('solid' being a greatly exaggerated term for the mush we've been feeding her). So far so good. She does seem to eat slower the thicker it is and Jon always keeps a bottle of water nearby to 'hydrate' the baby. Being a vegetarian family poses fun challenges. For her calcium and protein needs, we mix in a spoonful of organic, all natural yogurt in her mush. She gets plenty of vitamins and minerals from the veggies (mostly sweet potato, pumpkin, potato, carrots, etc...) that we either make from organic produce or get from Mr. Gerber. Additional carbs are provided by mashed organic brown & white rice, oatmeal, and Pablum (invented by three Canadian doctors, by the way.) We try to sneak in other nutrients, for example for good fats, by adding a stealthy dose of mashed avocado or almond butter. We aren't being too adventurous yet since Madeleine's digestive system has just started to deal with all these 'foreign' foods. She still breast feeds, so she's still getting the 'good stuff'... but that will change soon as weaning is next of the 'to do' list. For your viewing pleasure, here is Madeleine having breakfast. How more entertaining can you get?
