w Countdown has begun

Apparently John the Rabbit is a folk song of African origin.  It is of the call-and-response variety where one singer sings the call (the left side of the page) and others sing the response (the right side of the page).  The response in this example is a very simple, yet polite, yes ma'am, except for the last turn when it changes to no ma'am

Songs that have simple melodies and repetitious lyrics are good for children, especially infants who can use them to develop their hearing and language skills.

Oh, John the Rabbit

Oh, John the Rabbit

Yes, ma'am

Has a mighty habit

Yes, ma'am

Jumpin' in my garden

Yes, ma'am

Cuttin' down my cabbage

Yes, ma'am

And my sweet potatoes

Yes, ma'am

And my fresh tomatoes

Yes, ma'am

And if I live

Yes, ma'am

To see next fall

Yes, ma'am

I just might not have

Yes, ma'am

No garden at all

No, ma'am!
